Psychosomatic Research

چکیده
The bulk of this book is made up of a collection of papers from the Second Medical Service, Wilhelmina Gasthius, Amsterdam, which were published in various scientific journals between 1956 and 1960; and this fact might diminish the reader's interest. It would be a pity if so, for they have been edited and arranged and added to, in such a way as to give a most stimulating account of the development of the psycho-matic research unit and its thinking; and the book may be studied as a blueprint, not only for methodology but for administration. More than this, the papers are themselves worth re-reading. Psychomatic medicine has developed so fast in the past decade that it is difficult to recall how important they Were when first published, and it is also extremely convenient to have so many together. In particular, there is a provoking paper by Drs. Groen and Bastiaans, unpublished before, which formulates a hypothesis to explain and link together the many theories on the causation of asthma. Dr. Van der Valk has produced a similar valuable hypothesis for hypertension, and there are papers on ulcerative colitis, skin reactions, and the psychological variables correlated with psychomatic illness. Finally, there are suggestions which obstetricians should read on the effects of general handling on the aggressive reactions of individuals and their tendency to abort?though these individuals happen to be Syrian hamsters.
